Long-term exposure can cause chronic respiratory irritation and digestive dysfunction. Easily soluble in organic solvents such as chlorobenzene and diethoxymethane. Miscible with water, alcohol, and acetic acid. Very corrosive, it can react with all metals except platinum, gold, and tantalum to form metal bromides. It is also very reductive, and gradually turns yellow-brown when exposed to air and sunlight due to the release of bromine.

1. Determination of sulfur, selenium, bismuth, zinc and iron. Separation of tin from arsenic and antimony, alkylation catalyst, reducing agent, organic synthesis, preparation of organic and inorganic bromides, and high-purity metal refining.
2. Used to manufacture various bromine compounds, and can also be used in medicine, dyes, spices and other industries; it is the basic raw material for the manufacture of various inorganic bromides such as sodium bromide, potassium bromide, lithium bromide and calcium bromide, and certain alkyl bromides such as methyl bromide and ethyl bromide. It is used in medicine to synthesize sedatives and anesthetics. It is also a good solvent for some metal minerals and is used for the refining of high-purity metals.
3. Used as an alkylation catalyst in the petroleum industry. Separation agent for alkoxy and phenoxy compounds, and catalyst for the oxidation of alicyclic hydrocarbons and chain hydrocarbons to ketones, acids or peroxides.
4. Used in the pharmaceutical industry to synthesize sedatives, anesthetics and other medical supplies.
